Camera Configuration Checklist

Here’s the checklist to set up your camera for optimal communication with our platform.

  1. Video Compression set to H.264
Ensure your camera’s Video Compression is set to H.264. Our platform communicates with your camera using H.264 streams so it is important to ensure it is set to this configuration if not your camera will appear offline on the portal.
  2. Smart Codecs are set to “Off”
Ensure that the Smart Codecs or U-Code are set to “Off” or you can go to stream. Leaving it on enables a format on your camera that will not be able to translate an event onto our platform.
  3. Latest Firmware
Ensure your cameras are running on the most up to date firmware available.
  4. Connected to the Internet
Cameras must connect to the Internet to reach our cloud. They should not be connected to the back of an NVR on a separate virtual local area network with no internet access.
  5. ONVIF user is created
Ensure that ONVIF user is created and added to your camera. Many cameras require a user to be created specifically connecting to ONVIF metadata and modules. The ONVIF user should match the admin credentials exactly so that RTSP and ONVIF credentialing can happen simultaneously.
  6. No Special Symbols in Password
Let’s check to ensure the following restricted characters are not in your camera’s admin password. These symbols are known to cause issues with your camera’s ONVIF communication to our platform.
If you have already updated the camera credentials locally, simply open the camera’s properties window and from the Troubleshooting tab, enter the new user credentials for your camera.
  7. Correct Time Settings
Setting the correct time settings is essential and will lead to event issues if programmed incorrectly. Ideally, devices should receive their time from a Network Time Protocol server like pool.ntp.org. Check to ensure the time settings on your device are correct and that you can ping the Network Time Protocol server.
  8. Device has a path to the internet
This is usually as simple as a camera being connected to the network and having an IP address. Ensure that the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP is turned on.

Take a moment to review these configurations on your demo device before moving to your next step. This will ensure your camera is ready and optimized for analytic event configuration.
